Drunk driving takes 28 lives each day, which accumulates to over 10,000 people each year in just the United States (MADD Statistics). In 2011, 316 people died in Ohio due to drunk driving (The Century Council – Ohio). Alcohol by definition is â€Å"depressant derived from the fermentation of natural sugars in fruits, vegetables and grains† (What is Alcohol). Alcohol is considered a drug and in excess can be deadly not only to those consuming it but also to those around them. The higher one’s blood alcohol content, or BAC, is the more likely they are to hurt themselves and the people around them. There are guidelines set to determine how high one’s blood alcohol content can be to legally drive, but enforcing these laws can be a struggle. Another important aspect to understand when speaking of blood alcohol content is what the definition of one drink is. One alcoholic drink is equivalent to 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1- ½ ounces of 80 proof liquor (Alcohol Fact Sheet). It takes the average body around one hour to metabolize all of the alcohol in one alcoholic drink (Alcohol Fact Sheet). The more alcoholic drinks one has in a short period of time, the higher and quicker their blood alcohol content rises, this is known as binge drinking. In most states, there is a zero tolerance policy for underage drinking. In Ohio, the blood alcohol content to be considered zero tolerance is .02, meaning anyone under the age of 21 who has a .02 blood alcohol content or higher is considered to be driving drunk (Ohio Drunk Driving Laws). The technical term used in Ohio to describe underage drunk driving that is between a blood alcohol content of .02 and .08 is Operating A Vehicle After Underage Consumption (DUI and DWI in Ohio). This is the equivalent to a 200-pound male drinking just short of 2 drinks in one hour (Blood Alcohol C alculator).
